About

This blog is by an Estonian discovering her childhood dream country Canada. Based in Toronto, but sometimes traveling. Looking for an Estonian connection in the far away country and giving away tips about what to see, what to do, what to experience. Hence the name of the blog: Toronto. Canada. Estonia.

Estonian design

Some original stamp and book cover design from the 50's. I like the colors and the brush strokes - so powerful, strong and sharp.

Pair of shoes vol. 2

When walking home after the lecture at Tartu College, I came across another pair of shoes :) Isn't that something! You can see Tartu College in the far right corner.

Alberta Estonians

Tartu College opened an exhibition about Alberta Estonians, who were the first to come to Canada and settle here. The community at this day is not very large, but it is still there and they are trying to keep Estonianism alive.

Pair of shoes vol. 1

When I saw these shoes left for people to take in front of Tartu College, I didn't know that there is more in the store for me. Check my later post ;) But these fragile shoes look so perfect surrounded with all this concrete.

Soviet Estonia

I found a book called "Estonian art". Since I like art I looked in.

On first page I found a photo of Lenin:

And some great surprises:

Time's have changed!

Ruth Tulving has passed

Very creative and well-loved artist Ruth Tulving has passed. Too bad I wasn't there earlier to meet her and get a piece of her creativity. I noticed from the local Estonian community paper Eesti Elu that our president Toomas Hendrik Ilves has paid his respects.

Rest in peace, Ruth.

Tartu College on photos

I have been closely related to Tartu College, while being a volunteer at times and participating in meetings there and doing some work during my second year in Canada. The college has office rooms, rooms for Estonian institutions, archive and archive work stations. All you can see above.

Welcome to a little piece of Estonia, in Canada.

Yes. I did put that poster of Eric Clapton on the wall.

Fall storm

When it was time to meet my brother, who was visiting over Estonia, I experienced a great fall storm. It was so strong that I thought it would lift me up to the air - cycling was going to be tough! :)
I have never seen a storm like that before :O

Bye volunteering!

Lots of bye's from now on, as in two days I will leave home!
Boxes I will miss you, as it was fun to arrange the contents of you!
It was great to know the staff at Tartu College and make some new friends, such as Katre and Annaliis. Hopefully we will see you all soon!

Katre is leaving

That is the last photo I snapped of Katre before she was off to home to Germany. It was so much fun with her and she is a true party animal. Whohooo! All the best to you, Katre and see you soon!

Tõnu - Am I Estonian project

Tõnu is another person who I took photos of for the Am I Estonian project. I like this shot a lot because of a very strong pose, interesting lighting and how the Estonian national costume's belt is presented.

Kristen in her kitchen

Here is more from Kristen's kitchen. She has tokens she had made herself out of old Estonian coins which are no longer valid, as we got Euro as of the beginning of 2011. The lovely picture presents Estonian folk dancers and if I remember correctly it was done by her grandmother.

I will continue my shoots in 2012, as I will be soon off to my vacation and more excitement from there.
